Kundalini Yoga

With Anuskha Ager-Perera

Kundalini Yoga is an ancient yogic practice that combines physical postures (asanas) , breath control (pranayama), meditation and chanting (mantras) to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

The practice is centred around the concept of *Kundalini*, which is believed to be a dormant energy centre located at the base of the spine. Through specific exercises and techniques, Kundalini Yoga aims to awaken this energy, allowing it to rise through the chakras (energy centers) of the body, ultimately leading to higher consciousness, self-awareness, and spiritual enlightenment.

This workshop will take place on the 29th of June, between 11.30am and 3.30pm.

These Are Some of the Benefits of Kundalini Yoga

1. Increased Energy: It helps in activating and balancing your energy system, leading to a natural feeling of vitality and renewal.

2. Emotional Healing: The practice can help release stored emotional blockages, leading to a sense of emotional balance and peace.

3. Enhanced Focus and Clarity: Through breathwork and meditation, it improves concentration and mental clarity.

4. Stress Reduction: The combination of physical postures and breath control is known to calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and alleviate stress.

5. Spiritual Growth: As it focuses on the awakening of the Kundalini energy, it is often practiced for personal transformation, enlightenment, and self-realisation.

6. Improved Physical Health: The physical movements and poses help with flexibility, strength, and overall health, especially in the spine, nervous system, and digestion.

What Does the Workshop Include?

We start the workshop with brief introductions, a short chant by me to give thanks for joining and giving ourselves the time to unite in the workshop.

Followed by gentle warmups and pranayama to prepare for the kriya. A kriya is a complete set of exercises, breathwork, music and meditation for a sometimes specific goal. For example, there are kriyas to release anger, to boost immunity etc.

A kriya can take up to 40 minutes. We then have a short break, usually for 10 minutes.

We rejoin to prepare for the second kriya after a short explanation which would include the reasons for the kriya, the benefits and personal goals. Both kriyas are practiced with uplifting music (not necessarily Kundalini chants).

After the second kriya, we break for lunch for 40 minutes.

We come together after lunch for a more gentle, relaxed and reflective time, where we listen to Kundalini chants, consolidate the time we’ve had together by a meditative kriya and end our session with Yoga Nidra which is a guided relaxation technique.

We close our session with an informal discussion and Q & A.

About My Own Yoga Journey... As a Practitioner and as a Teacher

I was first introduced to Hatha yoga as a teenager by my aunt in Sri Lanka, as I travelled and lived in different countries with my parents, the thread which kept me grounded was yoga.

My love for yoga took me on a journey of exploring the many different schools of yoga. I did my teacher training with Sky and then with Guru Singh and plan to continue my exploration.

In addition to my personal Kundalini practice of over 20 years, I still love and practice Hotpod yoga.
I have taught yoga and breathwork to both adults and children for many years and currently run a weekly online breathwork session for adults. I have also been involved with Wellbeing days and running mindfulness sessions for adults.

I have found myself returning to sharing Kundalini Yoga, primarily because I feel it offers more than a physical workout – it’s a powerful journey of self-discovery, transformation and spiritual awakening.
